Hundreds of Thousands of Children Are Hungry in Israel

The statistics of the poverty report publicized by the government tell of over 1,200,000 people living under the poverty line, including 600,000 children who have simply been born into this difficult reality. Unemployment has reached new proportions and the number of unemployed is steadily increasing. As of today, about 10-11% of the Israeli work force is unemployed - approximately 250,000-280,000 people. In addition, many businesses are closing or reducing their staffs, such as the last wave of dismissals in Bank HaPoalim of close to 900 workers, the thousands of workers dismissed from the tourism sector in 2002-03, the sale of the Mashbir LaTzarchan department-store chain, etc. Also, thousands of businesses are about to close and many others are making an effort to survive. In the public sector there are many budget deficits that make it difficult for Israel - the welfare state - to act for its citizens. The situation is such that even a number of hospitals have recently threatened to close. To this is added a difficult ongoing defense position that makes it hard for the economy to survive and, of course, many other reasons that always existed caused very many families to encounter a difficult economic situation involved with much frustration.

Especially considering that finding employment has become harder than ever and, on the other hand, that the number of job-seekers is growing daily and that therefore many families often remain without income for many months and accumulate many debts (if, fortunately, they have from whom to borrow), they approach a state of hunger and their children go to sleep hungry and wake up even hungrier.

Then we, the volunteers of  Lev hachesed, make a great effort for them day and night to serve as a small support in this difficult time by distributing rich food baskets every week throughout the year till better times arrive for us all.

"Anyone who saves one soul in Israel is as if he saves the whole world."

In Israel there are over 600,000 children who go to sleep hungry and wake up even hungrier. Lev hachesed gives them food and helps them to smile. You can also help them.
